Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) originated over 5,000 years ago and has spread throughout Asia from China to Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Taiwan, Tibet, Vietnam and many other places, while continuously advancing. Today, TCM is no longer only popular in Asia but has become a well-known alternative therapy in most Western countries, being used by all types of people for a variety of health conditions.
Acupuncture is one of the main branches of TCM which is based on Meridian Theory (also known as Jingmai in TCM). Meridians are invisible pathways that run throughout the body forming inner networks that connect the internal organs and specific regions of energy. In TCM, each Meridian corresponds to an internal organ or specific energy region such as the Lungs, Large Intestine, Stomach, Spleen, Heart, Small Intestine, Urinary Bladder, Kidney, Pericardium, San Jiao (extra organ), Gall Bladder and Liver. There are more than 400 points along the Meridians that can be used, including points on the 4 Extra Meridians, the Du Mai, Ren Mai, Chong Mai and Dai Mai. There are also several extra points that can be used on various locations of the body that are not associated with any particular Meridian.
When imbalances develop inside or outside the body, the internal organs and specific energy regions try to maintain balance and harmony through the Meridians, which can be stimulated at certain points on the body. Yin and Yang Theory, as well as 5 Element Theory, also applies to the Meridians and how points can be used or combined to treat specific health conditions. The Meridians, internal organs and specific energy regions of the body also promote the development and maintenance of the blood, bones, muscles, skin and tendons, which are known as the Collaterals or Luomai in TCM. Acupuncture and Acupressure have been used to help balance the internal organs, specific energy regions and the Yin and Yang aspects of the body to assist in wellness as well as disease prevention. In TCM, the body, mind and spirit of an individual are not looked at separately but as a unit so that health and wellness can be maintained over a person’s lifetime.
