Seasonal Food

Nature often produces the right types of food for each season, so eating what is in season is often best. Though there are many different types of food that can be eaten in each season, here are just a few examples:

In the spring, life goes through growth and renewal. Therefore, one should eat more yang to match the growing season. Fresh, leafy greens and sprouts are very good for this season. Spring is also the time to get rid of the stored up fats and start moving out of winter hibernation. It is important to eat less meat and more vegetables. Sour juices from plums and different vinegars are also good during this time.

In the summer, yang is very high so one needs to cool the body down with more yin. Tomatoes and cucumbers are high in yin and ripen during this time, so they are preferable vegetables to eat.

Autumn is a time in which everything starts to wane or die and move toward hibernation. It is an important time of transition in which yin and yang retreat into the body. One should eat warm foods, like squash and pumpkins, to help maintain the body through this transition period.

Winter is a time of hibernation. It is important at this time to maintain yang in the body and chase out the excess yin. During the winter, eating hot soup with meat and root vegetables is good for the body.
